Panel 29 - Vigilante Violence

 

- The Murder of Obadiah Smith, Seeking Damages -

 

One infamous murder during the war was that of Obadiah Smith, a Baptist minister and Missouri state representative. A band of bushwhackers dressed as Union troops fooled Smith into surrendering his weapon. Confederates suspected Smith of helping Union General Jim Lane burn the town of Osceola, Missouri, in 1861, and murdered Smith in retaliation in April 1863.

 

  • The documents featured on this panel are from an 1866 lawsuit in which the administrator of Obadiah Smith's estate sued Amos Beck and 12 other defendants for damages inflicted on Smith's estate. He was awarded $12,000 in damages.
