Panel 16 - Caught in the Middle

 

- Forced Conscription, Discrimination, Disrupted Government -

 

Missourians faced forced conscription, discrimination, and disrupted government. A person's political views could often determine how easy or hard life was, or even whether you lived or died.

 

  • The group of documents featured on this panel describe how men in Cape Girardeau and Mississippi County were forced into military service by the Union Army.

 

  • The letter shown on this panel relates how a woman in Jefferson City was evicted by her landlady for being a Union sympathizer.

 

Elsewhere, courts were suspended and government buildings were burned. Even the state mental hospital was closed. This degree of chaos is hard to imagine, but it was a daily fact of life for Missourians at this time.
