In 1948, Missourians everywhere watched as Truman defied the political pundits and negative newspaper coverage to pull off the "biggest political upset in American history." This exhibit compiles the memories and memorabilia of those in the background — as children, as young adults, as voters, or as local politicians — and what they remember of that November 2, 1948 election. The campaign whistle stops, the "Give 'Em Hell, Harry" cries — all these memories combine to create a truer embodiment of Truman's determination to win the election than the official returns that gave him the victory.
This exhibit is made up of four categories covering various aspects of Truman's election in 1948. The categories include: Nomination, July 1948; Whistle Stop Campaign, July — October 1948; Election Day, November 2, 1948; Inauguration Day, January 1949.
