WHEREAS, in the ten years since 9/11, the men and women of the United States armed forces, including thousands of Missourians in the regular military and in the Missouri National Guard, have protected our country by valiantly serving at their posts, both at home and overseas, not only leaving loved ones for extended periods of time, but also carrying out missions under wartime conditions; and
WHEREAS, men and women in uniform have also responded many times in just the past year to the call of duty here in Missouri by providing tireless assistance that has saved lives and property in the wake of devastating natural disasters which have affected our state, including tornadoes in Joplin, Sedalia and the St. Louis area; flooding along our rivers; and a record blizzard; and
WHEREAS, the professionalism and training of those in uniform was particularly demonstrated after the Joplin tornado, when more than 400 law enforcement, fire protection and emergency response agencies rushed to Joplin to give badly needed help; and
WHEREAS, those who wear the uniform of the military, law enforcement, fire protection and emergency response services are committed to their duties and carry them out with a high degree of professionalism and integrity, even as they often put themselves in harm's way to protect the citizens of Missouri; and
