Author Walter E. Busch leads a discussion exploring Confederate Gen. Sterling Price’s raid through Missouri on Thursday, September 11, 2014, at 7 p.m., where he argued Price’s raid was more effective than most historians acknowledge.
The Battle of Fort Davidson, also known as the Battle of Pilot Knob, was the opening engagement of Price's Missouri Raid during the Civil War. On the morning of September 27, 1864, a force led by Price attacked the installation, just outside of Pilot Knob in Iron County. Although outnumbered by more than 10-to-1, the Union defenders held off repeated Confederate assaults and slipped away during the night.
Walter E. Busch, natural resources manager for the Fort Davidson State Historic Site and a prolific author on Price and the Battle of Pilot Knob, will lead the audience through this and other intriguing events associated with the general’s historic raid through Missouri.
The Missouri State Archives is the official repository for state documents of permanent historic value, and is located at 600 West Main St. in Jefferson City. All programs at the Archives are free of charge and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
