Christmas Books Available from Wolfner Library for Kindergarten-Grade 3

At the end of each annotation you will find the call number or numbers for each title. BR means braille. Braille is contracted (grade 2) unless otherwise noted. A Print/Braille book has braille, standard text, and illustrations. LP means large print. RC and WOC mean recorded cassette. MOD is a recording in cassette format made by Wolfner Library volunteers. Not all titles are available in all formats.

Bonjour, Babar!: The Six Unabridged Classics by the Creator of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff.
Contains the six stories written by Brunhoff between 1931 and 1937. These tales, chronicling the life and adventures of Babar the elephant, include "The Story of Babar," "The Travels of Babar," "Babar the King," "Babar and Zephir," "Babar and His Children," and "Babar and Father Christmas." Carlos, Light the Farolito by Jean Ciavonne.
It is Christmas Eve, and tonight the peregrinos will come to Carlos's house as they search for shelter for Joseph and Mary. It is an honor to host the last night of Las Posadas, and Carlos can hardly wait. His grandfather always plays the role of the innkeeper, but Carlos's parents and grandfather have gone to town. The Christmas Teddy Bear by Ivan Gantschev.
Christmas is only two days away when Ellen and her mother arrive to visit Grandma and Grandpa at the country estate where they work as caretakers. Elijah’s Angel: A Story for Chanukah and Christmas by Michael J. Rosen.
Michael, a nine-year-old Jewish boy, spends long hours at the barbershop of Elijah, an elderly black man who is Christian and is a woodcarver. Michael loves Elijah's work. When Elijah gives Michael an angel on a day during Chanukah that is also Christmas Eve, Michael worries it is a "graven image"—until his father assures him it is a symbol of friendship, which is universal. Grandfather’s Christmas Camp by Marc McCutcheon.
It is Christmas Eve, but Lizzie and Grandfather can't get ready for the holiday until they find Mr. Biggins—grandfather's three-legged dog who often wanders off to hunt deer. All bundled up, they set off up the mountain, carrying Grandfather's backpack along. Lizzie gets tired on the long trip, and they decide to spend the night in the woods. Guess What Trees Do by Barbara Rinkoff.

Gus and Grandpa and the Christmas Cookies by Claudia Mills.

Horrible Harry and the Christmas Surprise by Suzy Kline.
The collapse of Miss Mackle's squeaky old rocking chair, with her in it, certainly gives her class a good laugh, but unfortunately it puts her in the hospital for the Christmas season. Now Mr. Cardini, the principal, must try to play her role as Mother Goose in Room 2B's holiday skit. An Island Christmas by Joseph Lynn.
Rosie lives on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. There is much for her to do to help prepare for Christmas—red sorrel must be picked for the sorrel drink, the black currant cakes and the alloe pies must be mixed, and the guava branch must be decorated. The Legend of the Poinsettia by Tomie de Paola.
Lucida is helping her mother make a new blanket for the baby Jesus for the Christmas procession. Her mother becomes ill, and Lucida tries to finish the blanket but gets the threads all tangled. With no gift for baby Jesus, Lucida does not want to go to church. But an old woman tells Lucida any gift she gives will be loved. A surprise awaits everyone when Lucida brings a bunch of weeds to church. For grades K-3 and older readers. Print/Braille BR 9935. Lucy’s Christmas by Donald Hall.
The leaves on the trees are beginning to turn red, and Lucy Wells knows it is time to start planning for Christmas. Her parents order a Glenwood kitchen range from Sears Roebuck in Chicago, and during the fall and winter, Lucy makes presents for her family and friends to share at the South Danbury Christian Church Christmas celebration. Marvin’s Best Christmas Present Ever by Katherine Paterson.
Christmas is coming, and Marvin wants to make a nicer present than the one he made for his parents last year. Finally he decides to make a big wreath to hang on the end of their house trailer. But when Christmas is past, he doesn’t want the wreath taken down. For grades K-3. BR 12128.

Petunia’s Christmas by Roger Duvoisin.
Pet goose Petunia tries to rescue Charles, a neighboring farm's handsome gander, who is being fattened for Christmas dinner. For grades K-3. Print/Braille BR 16037.

Pippi Longstocking’s After-Christmas Party by Astrid Lingren.
First published in Sweden in 1950, this story continues the adventures of young Pippi Longstocking, who lives in a house called Villa Villekulla with her monkey and her horse. When she posts an invitation to an after-Christmas party, all of the town children are ecstatic. For grades K-3. RC 43564.

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg.
On a dark Christmas eve, a boy boards a mysterious train, the Polar Express, hoping to visit Santa Claus. He and the other children, still in their nightclothes, drink hot chocolate and sing carols as the train races through snowy landscapes toward a huge city at the North Pole. Caldecott Medal. A Pussycat’s Christmas by Margaret Wise Brown.

Sam’s Wild West Christmas by Nancy Antle.
On Christmas Eve, Sam and the members of his Wild West Show help a trainful of people who were robbed. Sam and Rodeo Rosie follow the robbers' trail and find that outlaws Flo and Bo have captured a "very unmerry-looking gentleman in a red suit." For grades K-3. BR 13518.

Santa Calls by William Joyce.
Art Atchinson Aimesworth lives in Abilene, Texas, with his aunt and uncle who run a Wild West Show and Animal Phantasmagoria. And while he has a weakness for sweets and a tendency to be mean to his sister, Esther, that all changes with the Christmas of 1908. Art, a crime-fighting whiz kid, is mysteriously summoned by Santa Claus and embarks on a rollicking Christmas adventure with Esther and his best friend that brings them closer together. Sophie’s Tom by Dick King-Smith.
Sophie wakes up early on the morning of her fifth birthday, which also happens to be Christmas. Sophie, who is small but very determined, has declared that she will become a farmer, and her gifts include a toy farm. Delighted with the presents, Sophie nevertheless wants a real animal, a pet, to care for, but her parents will not allow it. Thank You, Santa by Margaret Wild.
Although many children write to Santa before Christmas, not too many write afterwards. Samantha, who lives in Australia, becomes Santa’s pen pal, and they correspond throughout the entire year. Toot & Puddle: I’ll Be Home for Christmas by Holly Hobbie.
