Kander Awards Digital Imaging and Website Development Grants to Springfield-Greene County Library District
Library Will Expand Its Successful World War I Project
Jefferson City, Mo. — Secretary of State Jason Kander today announced that Springfield-Greene County Library District received $108,678 in two grants to further develop its successful World War I project, Over There: Missouri and the Great War.
The library will develop an interactive website for the project that will include detailed narrations and 360-degree photos of World War I artifacts. The library will also digitize 74 collections related to World War I with a digital imaging grant.
"Over There: Missouri and the Great War provides an important perspective on the events of World War I and offers greater insight into our state and national history," Kander said. "Making these records available online is part of my commitment to increasing Missourians’ access to our state’s rich history."
The digitized collections will be available on the new website for Over There: Missouri and the Great War, as well as www.MissouriDigitalHeritage.com. Missouri Digital Heritage is a collaborative effort by the Missouri State Archives and the Missouri State Library, two divisions of Kander’s office, that gives researchers access to 425 historical collections from more than 100 of Missouri’s local libraries, universities and cultural institutions in one single, searchable destination.
Kander also awarded the library a third grant in the amount of $6,630 to promote literacy and educational enrichment. The funds will be used to give youth the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with computer programming.
The secretary of state’s grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.
In the 2014 fiscal year, the Missouri State Library has approved a total of 129 grant applications, distributing $1.4 million in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
