Carnahan announces September as national voter registration month

Informs Missourians of October 10 registration deadline and helpful resources

- Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan today joins fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in reminding citizens that September is National Voter Registration Month. Carnahan is working to make eligible Missouri voters aware of registration deadlines and requirements for the November 6 general election, as well as resources available to help with the registration process.

“I want to encourage eligible Missourians to register and make sure their registration information is up-to-date,” Carnahan said. “Whether you’re registering for the first time or just changing your address, now is the time to contact your local election authority to ensure you are able to vote on November 6.”

In Missouri, the deadline to register to vote is Wednesday, October 10. To register, check the current status of your voter registration or obtain more information, please visit www.GoVoteMissouri.com.

Qualified Missourians may register to vote in person at their county clerk or local election board’s office, as well as any Department of Motor Vehicles office or state agency that provides services to the public. Voter registration forms may also be downloaded from the Go Vote Missouri website and mailed to the appropriate local election official, but must be postmarked by October 10.

Qualified Missouri voters must be 18 years of age by Election Day; a U.S. citizen and a Missouri resident. For additional information regarding eligibility and voting, please visit the secretary of state’s website at www.sos.mo.gov/elections.

The nation's secretaries of state established September as National Voter Registration Month to encourage voter participation and increase awareness of state requirements and deadlines for voting. Despite record-breaking registration and voter turnout levels in many states for the November 2008 presidential election, six million potential voters didn't cast a ballot because they missed a voter registration deadline or didn't know how to register to vote.
