SOS Home :: State Library :: Library Development :: Library Outreach to Spanish Speakers

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and the Missouri State Library present

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

These one-day workshops will equip library staff with the knowledge and resources to reach out to Spanish speakers in their communities and increase their access to technology. Participants will learn about cultural differences and how to build strong community partnerships with the Spanish-speaking community. They will also gain techniques for reaching out and marketing the public library and public computers, as well as learn about best practices and resources for providing technology training to Spanish speakers. Workshop attendants will receive an outreach manual, posters and bookmarks in Spanish, a Survival Spanish for Library Staff CD, and the opportunity to apply for a Library Outreach to Spanish Speakers grant to help implement what they have learned within their libraries.

Trainers for the workshops are being provided by the Professional Development Center of North Central Missouri College. These trainers specialize in Adult Education, including ESL, and train teachers statewide in best practices for instruction and learning.  By attending these workshops, library staff will:

  • Understand the benefits and challenges of reaching out to serve Spanish-speaking customers to increase their access to public computers and resources.
  • Learn how to build strong community partnerships and collaborate with the Spanish-speaking community.
  • Understand how to develop an action plan for reaching out to Spanish-speaking customers and increasing access to public computers in the library.
