CERTIFICATES OF ELECTION, 1838-2006

Arrangement: Chronological

Scope and Content

This series contains certificates of election for candidates who received the most votes. These certificates are not the ones, often called commissions, sent to and kept by individual elected officials (RSMo 115.523). Instead, these records certify which candidates have been elected. Often, on the basis of this certification, a commission is then issued, particularly in the case of county officials.

Coverage is haphazard except for a specific type of certificate called county officers elect; this pre-printed form must be filed with the office of secretary of state (RSMo 51.040) after each general election. County officers elect are first found in the early 1870s with a gap until 1892 when they generally appear every two years thereafter.

Arrangement early on for certificates of election is either by date of election or by date filed; therefore, check the year of the election as well as the year after. Many were filed in January of the next year. Some certificates for county officials in special elections are found in the certificates of election rather than the county officers elect. County officers elect are arranged alphabetically by the name of the county.
