Deeds and Easements, 1851-2006

Arrangement:  Chronologically by year of date filed (if known) and thereunder alphabetically by folder and chronologically within folders

Scope and Content

This series includes only those land transactions filed with the Commissions division of the Office of Secretary of State and that involve public lands in Missouri, as opposed to private lands of individuals. Other public land deeds, including swamp, seminary, and Jefferson City lots sold to the public, are found in the Land Office records. State park deeds are generally filed under the Department of Conservation records, although a few are found here.

Most of the deeds in this series are purchases for public institutions or are selling off state land at the direction of the General Assembly. Easements are usually granted for roads and utilities near public facilities. A number of the deeds from 1938-1941 deal with armories established for the Missouri National Guard. In other cases, it is not always apparent from the deed what the land was to be for, though it can be assumed that, for instance, the inlots around the state capitol in Jefferson City in 1912 were to enlarge the capitol grounds after the fire of 1911.

Many of the early deeds and easements are in individual folders because of voluminous abstracts of title. Starting in 1974, several smaller deeds and easements are foldered together. Generally there is only one folder per year. Because land is rarely identified with a state building or entity in later accessions, the description lists only the grantee when the state is the grantor or the grantor when the state is grantee.
