Scope and Content
Oaths of office are as the name implies. After being elected, candidates take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and also to abide by the laws of the state of Missouri and to uphold the standards to which they were elected. This series also includes oaths of non-elected officials. Most recent oaths of office for appointments made by the governor are now found in the series Gubernatorial Appointments. Oaths of office for capitol police officers may be found with their (non-gubernatorial) appointments in the series Miscellaneous Files.
From 1843 through 1986, the series is grouped by officials (boxes 15) and non-officials (boxes 69). Within groupings, they are arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically. After 1986, the series is no longer grouped by official or non-offiical but simply arranged chronologically and thereunder alphabetically. Because some oaths are held and sent together, such as those for the Water Patrol Officers, there may be a large span of years in one folder.
