Historical and Biographical Notes
Although the sixth governor of the state of Missouri, Lilburn W. Boggs (D) is the first for which the Missouri State Archives holds records. A native of Kentucky, Boggs served in the War of 1812 before arriving in Missouri Territory in 1816 to seek fame and fortune. His profession varied from bookkeeper, banker, storekeeper, fur trader, to government official. While in Missouri, he resided in St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, and Jackson counties. As governor, he was known for the Mormon War, the Honey War, chartering the Bank of the State of Missouri, and authorizing a new state capitol building after the first one was burned in 1837.
