Kander Highlights Missouri Investor Bill of Rights

Secretary of State’s Action Coincides with Financial Literacy Month

Jefferson City, Mo. — Secretary of State Jason Kander today highlighted the Missouri Investor Bill of Rights as a part of National Financial Literacy Month. In an effort to safeguard Missourians’ savings, the five-part list outlines the rights that Kander recommends prospective investors exercise prior to making investment decisions.

"All Missourians have the right to make fully informed investment decisions, regardless of their occupation, age, financial means or anything else," Kander said. "I encourage everyone to take advantage of their right to know all the relevant facts about an investment."

The Missouri Investor Bill of Rights includes the rights to:

Receive complete information about the risks, obligations and costs of any investment, including any potential sales charges, maintenance or service fees, transaction or redemption charges, commissions and penalties;

Receive a prospectus on the investment product being offered as well as copies of all completed account forms and agreements;

Receive accurate and understandable account statements on a regular basis and have the ability to access account funds in a timely manner;

Ask questions and understand the terms and conditions of any transaction and receive recommendations consistent with one’s financial needs and investment objectives; and

Contact the Missouri Securities Division in Kander’s office at 1-800-721-7996 to verify the employment and registration status of the person offering the investment opportunity before making a decision or to file a complaint.

"Knowing your rights as an investor can help you avoid becoming a victim of a scam," Kander said. "Any violation of these rights is a red flag that I encourage Missourians to report to my office by calling 1-800-721-7996."

National Financial Literacy Month takes place every April and is a time to highlight ways to establish and maintain healthy financial habits. Additional tips and information about investment fraud are available at
