Hi, I’m Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan. I want to thank everyone who went out to vote in Missouri's Presidential Primary election on February the 5th.
Not only is this election making history for the candidates, but in Missouri, we’re making history of our own.
Congratulations to all the voters, poll workers and campaign workers who participated in Super Tuesday. It turned out to be the largest voter turnout ever for a Missouri Presidential Primary.
According to our records, we nearly tripled our voter turnout from 2004 with almost 36% of registered voters coming out to the polls and making their voices heard.
You know, the voice of Missouri voters has always played an important role when it comes to presidential elections. And that’s because Missouri has become known as a "bellwether" state...because every year, except one, since 1900 we've accurately picked the winning Presidential candidate in the general election.
This year, in both the republican and democratic contests, the winner was not identified until late in the night. And in both contests, it was just decided by over 1% of the vote.
If you haven't already, I hope you will check out our election results on-line on our updated web site. It features interactive results and maps, and it will be a great tool for future elections.
Again, congratulations to all the Missourians who participated in Super Tuesday.
We’re all in for an exciting ride in the up-coming months leading up to the August primary and the November general election. If you’re not yet registered to vote, go to your local election authority or to our website and get registered.
Thank you and I hope to see even more of you at the polls in 2008.
