Introduction

The Missouri Division of Tourism is a section of the Department of Economic Development. The goal of the Missouri Division of Tourism is to increase interest in and travel to Missouri, thereby creating jobs and increasing tax revenues, in support of the overall economic development of the state. The Division of Tourism relies on advertising to promote the state's travel industry and vacation opportunities, and attempts to stay abreast of changing tourism industry trends with extensive research to assess the needs of Missouri's travel industry.

The Collection

The Missouri Division of Tourism Photograph Collection contains approximately 95,000 photographic slides that document Missouri's tourism industry from 1967-1999. This online collection of over 12,000 slides represents only a selection of the larger collection. Poor quality and repetitive items have not been included in the online collection. The collection also contains images of diverse subject matter. The photographs can be loosely grouped into the following categories: Events and Entertainment (festivals, rodeos, concerts and theater productions, venues, parades, reenactments and holiday events); Sports and Leisure (professional and college sports, as well as leisure activities like golf and water skiing); Nature (national and state parks, lakes, rivers, forest, caves, and wildlife); Agriculture and Industry (orchards, factories, etc.); History and Culture (museums, historic houses, government buildings, churches, colleges, mills, cemeteries, statuary and state historic sites); Tourist Destinations (amusement parks, zoos and shopping); Accommodations and Cuisine (resorts, bed and breakfasts, wineries, restaurants and hotels); People and Towns (street scenes, citizens, daily life); and Transportation (cars, trains, planes, boats, etc.). Additional images will continue to be added to the collection. Please check back for updates.
