The Office of Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander is proud to sponsor the National History Day regional competition for the central Missouri area (Region 4). Students in grades 6-12 from schools in Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau, Morgan, Osage, Pettis, and Saline counties conduct research on topics related to a broad annual theme (NHD Theme Book). The 2016 National History Day theme is Exploration, Encounter & Exchange in History . Individually or in groups students carry out research in libraries, archives, and museums; many conduct oral interviews and visit historic sites (Sample Topics).
Each year approximately 700,000 students from across the United States participate in National History Day. NHD contests are divided into a Junior Division (grades 6–8) and a Senior Division (grades 9–12), with nine categories per division, which are grouped by presentation type and may include individual or group documentaries, exhibits, performances, websites or an individual historical paper (NHD Student Project Examples) .
The central Missouri contest is held each year in late winter. The top three finishers in each category represent the region in the National History Day in Missouri competition at the University of Missouri-Columbia on April 30, 2016. First and second place finishers at the National History Day in Missouri competition proceed to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland-College Park from June 12-16, 2016 .
